The New Detroit

If you were to ask someone from out of state, what words they would use to describe the City of Detroit, you would most likely hear answers such as: corrupt, bankrupt, impoverished, and dangerous. We are all aware that Detroit has seen better days. What once was considered the “Paris of the West” and “The City of Tomorrow,” Detroit has become a shell of its former self. Detroit used to be a model American city, where innovators like Henry Ford and the Dodge Brothers helped to establish a strong economy that employed hundreds of thousands of people. That Detroit has become a distant memory.

Social Media Club Detroit EDU Podcasts

The Social Media Club Detroit (SMCD) has teamed up with Mac-OU INC once again for another year of exciting interactive monthly seminars for local small-business owners. This year, they are going back to basics with many introductory classes on topics such as YouTube, search engine optimization and LinkedIn. There’s even a “Blogging for Business 101” seminar on May 20, in which we hope to gain new ideas to spruce up this relatively new blog!

My Gratitude This Holiday

As the holidays are now upon us, I find it fitting to use this ‘day of thanks’ to express gratitude to all who have assisted the incubator during the past year. The abundance of those offering their free time to support the entrepreneurial community of Metro Detroit is astounding, and truly makes my work worthwhile.

Accelerating Michigan!

I recently attended a portion of the Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition (AMIC). For those of you who are not familiar with the program, AMIC is a business “pitch” competition founded by Ann Arbor SPARK, Automation Alley, Macomb-OU INCubator, and TechTown through the New Economy Initiative. The competition is open to entrepreneurs worldwide as well as students attracting local, national and international investors. Judging results in the awarding of cash prizes to winners in several categories with the overall winner (non-student) receiving a $500,000 award! That is some serious cash!
